Westbound: entertainment on a long car ride

After two weeks in Galena with Grandma and Grandpa, it was time to continue our westward journey from Illinois to Montana.  Our first day was a rather long day of driving all the way to the middle of South Dakota.

Entertaining two young kids all day in the car can be quite a feat.  I use several tricks.  There area always snacks.  I wrap up presents in brown paper and then the girls draw all over the brown paper before opening the present to find something new to entertain them for awhile.  We go through a lot of stickers.  Sheet of stickers + notebook for sticking = a really good time.  We do employ the portable dvd player, but we try not to over use it.

We play a lot of "I spy."  I see a cow.  I see a purple truck.  I see a wind farm.

On this particular day, after we had already been in the car for hours and hours, I was running short on options.  So for a little additional entertainment, the girls took turns making funny faces for me.  They loved that I could take a photo and then show them a pictures of themselves or their sister making a silly face.

There is an amazing rest stop that overlooks the river here.  But wouldn't you know it: the rest stop was closed!  Grrr ... bathroom emergency ensued which resulted in both girls taking turns peeing in the toddler potty on the side of the road!

I was so happy to reach our destination that evening!
